What's in a Name? Choosing a Title for Desert of Ash
When I wrote the original prototype for this game back in 2018, I didn't think too hard about what to call it. It's a post-apocalyptic game about gay sex. Boom! 'Post-Apocalyptic Gay Sex Simulator.' It got a decent amount of attention as far as text-only jam games go. As it turned out, that title is pretty evocative. It conveys a lot of what you need to know fairly quickly.
Flash forward to 2020, when I began making concrete plans to develop this as a full game. I was hesitant to keep the title the same. A more serious endeavour with a more serious narrative required a more serious title, I thought. The old title was still true, it just didn't convey everything I was going for with the full game. However, if I wanted this game to be a success, it seemed foolish to throw away that attractive, evocative title.
In the end, I compromised. 'Desert of Ash' communicates setting and tone, while 'Post-Apocalyptic Gay Sex Simulator,' now the subtitle, still makes sure you know just what kind of game this is.
As we gear up for release this year, I'll be sharing more of my thoughts and behind-the-scenes looks at the development process. Hit that follow button at the top right of this page to make sure you don't miss anything!
